JPG file format

JPEG – Joint Photographic Experts Group. Invented in 90s of the XX century, today it is the most widely spread format for image storage and web publishing. It became so popular due to its balance between image quality and size compression. Typically, size of a photo may be reduced by 10-20 times without any visible image distortion. Thus, JPEG is a standard format for storing images today.

ImageConverter Plus supports all features designed by JPEG format developers. ImageConverter Plus can read and save the following modifications of JPEG format:

  • Baseline (grayscale, YCbCr, RGB, YCbCrK, CMYK) - it is the most widely spread modification of JPEG. Most images in the world are now stored as Baseline YCbCr JPEG.
  • Extended sequential (8, 12 bit) - this is a rare modification of JPEG. Usually 12 bit grayscale JPEG is used to store medical images produced by X-ray or microscope devices.
  • Progressive – used mostly in Internet to quickly display images “on the fly”. Usually, a small part of transferred data is enough to display a rough version of the image.
  • Lossless - this JPEG modification is often used in medical images. 12 и 16 bit grayscale JPEG is one of standard output formats for various types of medical equipment.

We recommend that you should save your images into JPEG format. Photo collections, scanned color images or postcards can be well saved in {}Baseline JPEG format. If you plan to transfer your images over Internet, save them in {}Progressive JPEG format.
